This month we’re getting hands-on with weaving to create not one, but two adorable mini baskets using colourful cord and a clever paper cup base.
You’ll learn simple weaving techniques, add decorative touches, and shape your baskets into cute little pots—perfect for storing treasures, trinkets, or even gifting 💛

🎁 What’s Inside Your Kit
Make sure you’ve got everything ready:
- White cord
- Mustard yellow cord
- Rainbow cord
- Daisy chain decorations 🌼
- 2 fluffy pipe cleaners
- 2 paper cups
- Glue
You’ll also need from home:
- Scissors ✂️
- A ruler
- A marker or pen
🧺 Basket One: Woven Checker Pot
✏️ Step 1: Mark Your Cup (Template A)
- Take your first paper cup and template
- Mark the lines from the template onto your cup
- These marks show where you’ll cut
Now:
- Measure 2cm up from the bottom of the cup
- Mark dots all the way around
👉 This creates a base so your basket holds its shape
✂️ Step 2: Cut the Strips
- Cut from the top marks down to the 2cm line
- Try to keep the cuts straight
💡 Ask a grown-up if you need help
🌼 Step 3: Flatten the Cup
- Gently press the cup down into a flower shape
This makes weaving much easier
🧵 Step 4: Start Weaving (White & Yellow)
Time to weave!
- Place yellow cord under one flap
- Place white cord over
Now alternate:
- Yellow over, white under
- White over, yellow under
Repeat this pattern all the way around
💡 Keep the cords snug by gently pulling as you go
💡 If it tangles, pause and untwist
🔁 Step 5: Build Your Rows
- Continue for 3 rows
- Then begin your switch pattern to create a checker effect
This means:
- Sometimes the same colour goes over itself
- Pull the other cord around and under
👉 This creates that lovely woven look
🫶 Step 6: Shape Your Basket
- Gently lift the cup as you weave
- Start shaping it into a bowl
- Use your hands to guide it inward
🔚 Step 7: Finish the Weave
- Once you reach the top:
- Tie the cords together inside
- Trim any excess
- Tuck ends neatly inside
🔄 Step 8: Fold & Tuck the Edges
- Fold each strip over the top
- Tuck it into the second row down
💡 This keeps everything secure and neat
🌀 Step 9: Add a Twisted Rim
- Twist a length of cord using your fingers
- Wrap it around the top edge
- Feed the end through and pull tight
Optional:
- Tie a bow 🎀
- Or tuck the ends inside
🌼 Step 10: Add Daisy Decoration
- Wrap the daisy chain around the base
- Cut to size
- Glue into place
💡 Be generous—glue dries clear
⏳ Leave to dry for a few hours
🌈 Basket Two: Rainbow Weave Pot
✏️ Step 1: Mark & Cut (Template B)
- Mark your lines like before
- This time cut all the way down, stopping just before the base
🌼 Step 2: Flatten the Cup
- Press into a flower shape again
🌈 Step 3: Weave with Rainbow Cord
This one is simpler:
- Go under, over, under, over all the way around
- Complete 2–3 rows flat
- Then lift and continue weaving upward
💡 Don’t pull too tight—keep it even
🔚 Step 4: Finish the Weave
- When you run out of cord:
- Tie a knot
- Tuck the end inside
✂️ Step 5: Fold & Tuck
- Fold the top strips over
- Tuck into the second row (just like before)
💡 Trimming the tops slightly can make this easier
🧶 Step 6: Add Pipe Cleaner Trim
- Take one pipe cleaner
- Weave it around the outside (over and under)
- Take the second pipe cleaner
- Weave it around the inside
✨ This hides the cup edge and adds a soft, fluffy finish
🎉 You’re Done!
You now have two beautiful woven baskets 🧺🧺
