Included in Your Kit:

  • 4 x Wooden Cups
  • Navy Blue Fabric
  • 10 x Pastel Embroidery Threads
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Embroidery Hoop
  • Poly-fil Stuffing
  • Water Soluble Embroidery Paper
  • Wire Wool
  • UHU Glue
  • Design Template

You’ll Also Need:

  • Pencil
  • Scissors

✨ Key Tips:

  • Make sure you transfer your design as accurately as possible. A ruler can help keep your dashes straight and neatly aligned.
  • Each individual β€˜dash’ on the design represents one sashiko stitch. Start at one end and finish at the other for a neat finish.
  • Take your time stitching, keeping your stitches evenly spaced for a polished look.
  • Wire wool inside your pincushion helps keep pins and needles sharp, but it’s optional.
  • Please note, this craft kit is not a toy and is not intended for use by children.

Part 1: Transferring Your Design

  1. Fold and cut your transfer sheet into quarters.
  2. Peel one piece off the backing paper and place onto your chosen design on the template.
  3. Carefully trace the design onto the transfer sheet with a pencil.
  4. Peel off the transfer paper and cut around the outer circle.

Part 2: Preparing Your Fabric

  1. Cut your fabric into quarters.
  2. Loosen the screw on your embroidery hoop and separate the inner and outer hoops.
  3. Place the inner hoop on your work surface and the fabric on top, then push the outer hoop down and tighten.
  4. Centre your transferred design in the hoop.

Part 3: Stitching Your Sashiko

  1. Cut a 50cm length of embroidery thread and separate three strands.
  2. Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end.
  3. Start stitching each dash from start to end, following the design.
  4. Continue until the design is complete. Fasten off by looping your thread under the last stitch on the back.

Part 4: Finishing Your Fabric

  1. Loosen the hoop and remove your stitched fabric.
  2. Trim excess fabric to leave a 2.5cm border around the design.
  3. Place your fabric circle in lukewarm water to dissolve the transfer paper.
  4. Gently rub until all transfer residue is gone, then let dry.

Part 5: Assembling Your Pincushion

  1. Thread a 50cm length of any colour thread (two strands) and tie a knot.
  2. Sew a running stitch around the edge of the fabric circle, spacing stitches 3–4mm apart.
  3. Gather the edge but leave a small opening.
  4. Stuff one-third with polyfill, then add a quartered piece of wire wool.
  5. Continue filling with polyfill until firm. Pull the closing thread to seal.
  6. Secure the opening with 6–8 criss-cross stitches. Roll pincushion to shape.

Part 6: Mounting in Wooden Cups

  1. Apply a line of UHU glue inside the wooden egg cup, just below the top edge.
  2. Push the pincushion in so the bottom third sits inside the cup.
  3. Leave to dry 3–4 hours. Repeat for the remaining pincushions.

⏰ How Long Does This Tutorial Take?

Creating each pincushion will take around 1–2 hours, plus drying time for the fabric and glue. You can spread this over multiple crafting sessions.

🎨 Make It Your Way

Here are some ideas for personalising your Sashiko pincushions:

  • Get colourful: Use different thread colours for each row or stitch for a multicoloured design.
  • Design your own: Create your own sashiko patterns and trace them onto the transfer paper.
  • Paint that pincushion: Decorate your wooden egg cup for a unique finish.
