Sashiko Tutorial

For this craft kit and tutorial, we’re sharing our Japanese embroidery folk art of Sashiko!

This traditional textile process translates as ‘little stabs’ and was used by farmers and fisherman as a form of darning, or quilting stitch to build up warmth in winter clothing.

A little different to Western embroidery, the needle is much longer and loaded with multiple stitches to get these structured geometric lines.

The gorgeous linear stitching feels very contemporary and we’re seeing sashiko more and more with a modern approach.

Our craft kit included enough fabric to make two placemats, or the tutorial can easily be tweaked to make a bag, book cover or small cushion cover.

Orders for this kit have now closed, but you can see this month's kit further below.
