For February's kit, you'll be creating your own Papier-mâché terracotta vase! (Posted Feb 2023)
Taking inspiration from the trend for textured ceramics, we're bringing it to paper form for this project, as you create a terracotta-painted papier-mâché vase.
If you've bought this project, you'll find your tutorial video below (the password is on the front of the printed instructions in your box!)
Paper mache began in China, with the first examples dating back to the Han Dynasty around 200 AD. They used it to make warrior helmets and every day objects like mirror cases, snuff boxes, or ceremonial masks.
You'll explore this ancient art using paper mache pulp to sculpt and create a modern vase which, once dry, you'll paint in a warm, rich terracotta acrylic paint.
You'll construct a card base for your vase, then mix your papier mache pulp with water and knead the mixture together (gloves are included in your kit). Then you'll build up the papier-mâché by squeezing it onto your base.
You can make the surface smooth and even by ”rubbing on” the pulp or make different structures in the pulp by pressing bumps or scratching the surface.
Then choose how to paint your vase - making the whole thing terracotta-coloured, or leaving sections white, as we've done here.
We've also included a high-ball tumbler in your kit, to pop inside and hold your dried flowers or other display.
Everything you need to make your vase is inside your box, which includes:
- Papier-mâché Pulp
- Polycarbonate Hi Ball Glass
- Terracotta Acrylic Paint
- Paint Brush
- Mixing Container
- Gloves
- Masking Tape
As ever, you'll have step-by-step photo instructions (and a video tutorial online if you prefer to learn by watching) to make it easy to follow along as you create your project.
We love this project for the on-trend rustic quality of the vase - and how much fun it is to work with papier-mâché! Once made, it looks great on any shelf by itself or with dried flowers inside.
