This month, we’re embracing the time-honoured craft of marquetry—the art of arranging thin layers of wood veneer into intricate, decorative patterns. In this project, you’ll:
✔ Cut & Assemble – Learn how to cut the veneer with precision and layer the pieces seamlessly.
✔ Experiment with Patterns – Mix and match colours and shapes to create striking contrasts.
✔ Add a Metallic Touch – Use your marker to highlight details for a luxurious finish.
Marquetry is a calming, rewarding craft—perfect for slowing down, getting creative, and making something truly unique. Will you go for a sleek geometric pattern, a delicate floral motif, or an abstract design inspired by nature? The warm, natural tones of the veneer combined with a hint of shimmer create a beautiful blend of rustic charm and heirloom elegance.
Key Top Tips!
✔ Tackle your box one section at a time: cut, arrange, and glue each section before moving on to the next.
✔ Before gluing, arrange your pieces to make sure they fit just right. If needed, feel free to trim them for a perfect fit!
✔ While the glue dries, weigh the box down with something heavy (books work great!). This will keep the wood veneer nice and flat, preventing any curling.
✔ Don’t worry if things aren’t perfect—it’s all about having fun and making something special!
How long does this tutorial take?
No rush! The entire process, including drying time, will take about 3-4 hours. Take it easy—split it up across sessions and craft at your own pace!
Make it your own way
✔ Play with Colours: Mix and match the pieces you cut from each veneer colour to give your box a totally unique vibe. Get creative with combinations and watch your design come to life!
✔ Design Your Own Masterpiece: While we’ve given you a template to guide you, feel free to make your design truly yours. As long as the outer rectangles stay the same size, you can divide them up into any shapes you like. Go geometric, abstract, or even create a nature-inspired pattern—let your imagination run wild!
✔ Add Some Extra Sparkle: Grab your metallic marker and have fun adding details to your box. We used it to outline the shapes, but you can also doodle or create stunning patterns directly on the veneer for that extra pop of shimmer!
